Thanks! Haha I love the predator grill so I might be a bit biased. I don’t know if they are exactly unicorns, but they are rare enough. Even now there are only two RX450hs for sale between the two mega dealers here in Nashville. They had 2x as many LS500s as RX450h.

Nicely done, but whassamatta with Accounting/Finance as a career that you are trying to switch to journalism?

And yeah on the RX - I don’t really like my wife’s, but she loves it, and it’s absolutely perfect for her.

The one knock on it is that it’s frequently used as a minivan for people who hate minivans, but it’s not nearly as good at doing any of that stuff (like most crossovers, really).

I’m not trying to switch haha. Just add to the endless amount of hobbies I enjoy. Also gives me a way to convince people I should drive there cars. Have a super cool quasi-press car lined up for this weekend already. I’ll tell you all what it is on Friday to give me some ideas of what to do with it.

Aslo forgot to add, I would 100% daily a RX400h or 450h. Just like I said in the article, they completely change the vehicle. I think the “use it as a minivan without having a minivan” is perfect for us. We have 2 dogs and that’s it. I sure as Hades do not want a minivan. The RX is mom enough.

It’s really when you have 2+ small children (in car seats) that the minivan gains a hell of a lot of utility over any crossover. More space, but just as big a consideration is the low floor on the vans. Not an issue for you (or me) at this point!

Excellent work. Glad to know there is someone who ‘gets it’ with regard to the RX.

It was never a focused enthusiast vehicle. What it does is nearly everything well enough, and in tremendous comfort and style (argue about it all you want, personal taste is subjective, but Lexus does have plenty of style).

The new one I drove was absolutely amazing. I should have said this in the article, but the loaded one has all the tech that the LS500 does. It’s amazing! And comfortable! and fast! and definitely does not look like bland like the 1st 3 gens do lol.

Congrats on making it on RFD! That was an excellent read, and as the other second gen RX owner on Oppo (I’m assuming there aren’t any others), I agree entirely. I’m very happy both the RX’s in my family are AWD. It’s really nice to never have to worry about spinning the tires. The only time I can really get it to break traction is if I floor it in the snow.

I do wish I had an RX400h since the gas mileage is really my only complaint with my car and it’s still not terrible. Though, the hybrid didn’t exist in 2003 when my car was made so I can’t complain. Also, your RX400h looks fantastic for the mileage!

The silver one only has 120k, the grey one somehow looks better wit the 350,000. They are awesome vehicles. Only want for a new vehicle is going to have us replacing the wife’s car in a few years.

Almost all the tech as the new LS. The RX does not have the new cloud-based Nav and voice commands, nor does it have the more active and advanced lane keep system, rear pedestrian detection with auto braking, and front cross traffic alert.

The new LS can follow lanes and/or the car in front. It will also auto brake when a person is detected when in reverse. And warn of front crossing traffic.

The RX only ‘sees’ a well marked lane, and does not follow curves or the car in front. It only warns of motion when in reverse and will only brake if it feels the gap is too small. It does not see traffic is front. And the LS HUD is a full 24-inches wide on the windshield.

So, yes the RX does some of the same things, it is an older version of that technology and the LS represents the very newest offerings Lexus has for safety kit.

Also, just clarifying the difference between the RX and LS. I hope you don’t read any hostility into my comments, because there isn’t any.

I teach Lexus owners how to use all of those features as my full-time job. It can get rather esoteric when ones dives too deeply into the various specifics.

Excellent article! The RX is a great concept, and the idea of owning one from the outside sounds nice, but the backseat.

I’m very tall and I have a 36" inseam, so a “roomy backseat” to journalists is one where my knees still rest against the front seats (which is usually fine for me). These panels are hard and don’t allow your legs to push in; rather, they push your legs back. Also, the curves for “design” are designed for short legs, so unless I contort my legs weirdly, my legs are pushed even farther back. This was a major reason I disliked my RAV4 before I drove it, and a lack of these are a major reason why my sister’s Rogue and my mom’s CR-V are such great places to be, especially the Rogue. In the first-gen Rogue, the front seats are kind of hollow with a thin cloth sheet that springs back when you push your hand or knees into it. Great for tall people and trips!

Many cars have done away with those hard seats, and for good reason. The 2013 redesign of the RAV4 ditched them, and many other cars don’t have them.

Kidding but yeah I understand that. At 5'11" the backseat of the isf is the smallest thing ever. I have never noticed it in the 2nd Gen RX.

It does, but only in reverse. The LS ads to that with the ability to auto brake if it detects the outline of a person.

The LS then goes beyond the RX with Front Cross Traffic alerts.

I will say the cross traffic alerts in the back is a god send in my dads Tundra. That thing conservatively a half million feet long so i can never see anything. What state is your dealer in?

The LS is fantastic to drive. Got to take it around the track at Indy. Yes, That Indy. For a big luxury barge, it is truly astounding. It feels like a GS to be honest.
